Thanks for uploading File:Air Force Now -7.webm. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

And also:

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please check my FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 17:26, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File:Expedition 8 (15333164752).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I noticed you've uploaded File:License Free Photo - Creative Commons by gnuckx (11645343194).jpg and I thought I should draw your attention to a common error. Please give uploaded files meaningful names. Otherwise they are difficult to track and it is hard to tell what the file is about without actually looking at it. I suggest you rename your image with an intuitive name that describes the file itself. Thanks, and happy editing!

It looks like a lot of these files are lower resolution duplicates of files already available at Commons. Please avoid uploading duplicates, as this generates extra clean-up work. - 4ing (talk) 10:28, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
We are currently discussing the files in your batch upload called "License Free Photo - Creative Commons by gnuckx". Although gnuckx released them under a new licence as new files at Flickr, he has now also changed the licences for his previous photos with exactly the same content. Please feel free to have a look at Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#Creative Commons "downgrade". De728631 (talk) 15:03, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Vanished Account Byeznhpyxeuztibuo!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

@INeverCry: Looking at this users uploads, they all look to be pretty pointless and of little or limited value to the project, and their ridiculous naming seems to put them out of scope. We should consider their deletion unless it can be clearly demonstrated that the images of value to the project.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:07, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No objections from me. I'm off to bed, but I'll look into a mass DR tomorrow, if you or someone else doesn't beat me to it. I'm used to people who do mass transfers from Flickr or YouTube, as I do, being more selective and cleaning up their transfers as they go, but that doesn't seem to be going on here. He has a bunch of old presidential footage/speech videos awaiting license review, mostly Reagan, Bush SR, etc too. Some of his material may be in scope, if it's not copyvios... lNeverCry 11:19, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Unblock request granted

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, and one or more administrators has reviewed and granted this request.

Request reason: "These are not repeated copyright violations; I explained previously that I uploaded a group of images from the FDA, and if one looks at those finding the same issues are all from that one instance, I haven't uploaded more of the same since that one time, they just keep getting found in small amounts. I have been adding public domain images since and have only had issues from a single upload instance. I agree that there was some carelessness on my part, for which I would like the opportunity to clean up for myself. I do not want to be an imposition to others, but I do feel that I can contribute to the project in the long run. Please allow me the opportunity to redeem myself."

Also I would be happy to fix the poor file names if an administrator makes me a "File Mover", I am not trying to make problems for others. I would be happy to fix files names of others upload mistakes as well. -- Jasonanaggie (talk) 21:15, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose Did you "explain previously" why other editors are cleaning up your messes and not you yourself? I haven't seen you take responsibility for your action yet. Why do you continue with transfers while other users are doing mass DRs for them? Why aren't you cleaning up after yourself? And small amounts? Hundreds of transfers being tagged for DR/CSD are not small amounts. I oppose any unblock, unless this editor starts to realize his careless transfers are a problem that he has to address, not blow off like they're no big deal. I'm sure 4ing, Elisfkc, Ww2censor, Josve05a and others have better things to do. I wonder if this editor has reviewed his transfers at all. We need quality not quantity here at Commons. lNeverCry 21:43, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
How do I clean up the errors without the ability to delete, or move files? I am more than willing to do so, please enlighten me how I go about fixing these problems. I assure you I don't want to cause problems here. Jasonanaggie (talk) 21:47, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
For starters, categorize the files before uploading with Flickr2Commons. Second, those that are already uploaded, categorize with Visual File Editor or some other way to get all of them. Review the files before you upload thousands of images at a time. Elisfkc (talk) 21:54, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You've transferred thousands of files with Flickr2Commons and video2commons, and yet you don't know how to file mass deletion requests with a simpler tool (Help:VisualFileChange.js)? We have IP editors who use VFC. Look at the DRs on your talk above. You really had no idea how that was done? I'm beginning to think you're a much bigger danger to Commons than I thought. The clueless act isn't working for me either. Since thousands of files/transfers are in question here, I'm going to have to switch to an indef block until we can be reasonably certain you're not going to fill Commons with copyvios as you have been. Someone with 90,000 edits over 6 years shouldn't be asking me how to clean up their errors. lNeverCry 22:00, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I want to make things right here, if you further explore my history on Commons, I have not used it for over 6 years but only for a number of recent months. I am willing to agree to go over my past uploads and fix them if given the chance before uploading new images. I accept responsibility for the problems I have created. I only ask for the opportunity to fix the problems I have created by unblocking my account so I can do so.Jasonanaggie (talk) 22:14, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose for now. Support after 1 week block. Today alone, you uploaded more than 2000 images, several of which are essentially useless, some from a party with unidentified people (ask yourself how useful are these to the project) and others with totally meaningless names. When prepping images for upload in Flickr2commons you can add categories to all ot individually, which you don't seem to do and you can name each images with meaningful descriptive titles. Then they will be more useful to other editors and if you are more selective there will be less to nominate for deletion. Additionally you should be more careful with the licensing; just because an image or video comes from the National Archives or a Presidential Library does not mean it is in the public domain: you need to do some homework first. As others have said quality not quantity is better, so, if you are unblocked, take you time and do things properly so other don't have to clean up after you. You don't need to be a file mover to upload if you follow the advise. Ww2censor (talk) 22:19, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • That's fair, I agree that there was some carelessness on my part, for which I would like the opportunity to clean up for myself. I do not want to be an imposition to others, but I do feel that I can contribute to the project in the long run. Please allow me the opportunity to redeem myself. Jasonanaggie (talk) 22:23, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
INeverCry I acknowledge my mistakes and I would like to address the "serious problem," however I cannot do so unless I can be unblocked allowing me to correct the mistakes that I fully take responsibility for creating. I will not upload further before correcting the mistakes I have made in the past. I assure you that I am not some menace, and I take accountability for my prior conduct fully. Jasonanaggie (talk) 22:41, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have familiarized myself with VFC as introduced to me by INeverCry and I will begin nominating for deletion photos I have uploaded that should be deleted if I am unblocked. Jasonanaggie (talk) 00:10, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Removal of the indefinate block,  Oppose removal of the one-week block. A second (or third...) chance are given to users with good standing on other wikis etc. so they can learn and come back in the future. But a break to read all documents and stuff is needed. @INeverCry: Any thoughts?(tJosve05a (c) 07:44, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support removal of indef block, and  Oppose removal of one-week block. The indef block was not a preventative action but a ridiculously punitive action. Their reason on the indef block no effort to address this serious problem is obviously wrong, since Jasonanaggie said above that they are willing to correct their mistake. INC's statement I'm beginning to think you're a much bigger danger to Commons than I thought. is also much of a concern, this is not what I expected from an admin. @INeverCry: Please reconsider your bad faith action and apologize to Jasonanaggie. Jasonanaggie, I appreciate your willingness to fix your mistakes, but you have to wait for the 1 week block to expire to understand our policies and guidelines. I hope you take this block as a lesson that semi-automated tools are created to make tasks easier, not to make users lazy (I am not calling you lazy). -- Poké95 12:24, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Pokéfan95: This user has uploaded 1000+ copyvios, and has so far done nothing at all to clean up any of the problems. I warned them a week ago, and they brushed me off and quickly archived the warning and continued these careless mass transfers. His unblock request didn't make me feel like he was taking the situation very seriously. I was also concerned that someone with 90,000 edits here didn't know about VisualFileChange or how to clean up after their transfers.

I switched to an indef block to make sure that we had time to get this serious issue resolved and get a promise from the user that they would work to resolve the problem and change their behavior. I had no intention of keeping the block in place beyond that. I didn't do anything punitive or in bad faith. My only interest here is to protect Commons and make sure that this user's very problematic behavior doesn't continue. If this user comes to an understanding and agreement to resolve the issue, than of course the block can be removed at any time, with no objection from me. I just want to see him editing in a way that is more safe and constructive for Commons. lNeverCry 21:10, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@INeverCry: I warned them a week ago, and they brushed me off and quickly archived the warning Could you show me a diff shwoing that you warned them a week ago (6 October 2016 in this case)? I searched the history of this talk page, and I cannot find you neither in 6 October nor 7 October. Their most recent archive is also until 23 September 2016, so your warning was not there obviously.
I respect your opinion that you're not withdrawing this indef block (and I am thanking you for putting a lot of effort to protect Commons). But I believe that giving them a second (and last) chance is appropriate. Forgiveness is a virtue they say. I don't believe they are lying that they didn't know VFC, since I don't think that because you have been using a semi-automated tool for a long time and made tons of edits, it means you know other semi-automated tools too. Poké95 09:56, 14 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The problem behavior here is clear, as is the solution of being more careful with transfers. I see no need for further discussion. I'll reduce the block to 1 week since several editors above support that. After that week block is up, I hope this editor goes forward with a commitment to be more careful with their uploading. Thanks for your understanding. lNeverCry 18:53, 14 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File renaming

[edit]

Hi, Jasonanaggie, this image should be renamed because of #3, imo this not an apple but a ball. Since you were the uploader, your help would be highly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 12:43, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

video2commons flooding

[edit]

Please do not add 200+ tasks to video2commons in a short amount of time and leave 150+ pending in backlog, at least not before phab:T153488 is resolved. This will not only make your own tasks slower (current 223% overload make processing less efficient), but also make others wait for a long time before their tasks can be started (@Yann and Ainali: ). Labs has shared but limited capacity. Also pinging @Revent: since the videoscaling queue will probably go even crazier --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 13:32, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the ping! Ainali (talk) 13:46, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the videoscaling system has long been known to be fragile, and your rate of uploads of 'processing intensive' videos has exposed a number of serious bugs. WMF Operations has had to double the number of servers dedicated to transcoding videos, and the system still can't keep up (what is 'one' transcode at v2c is as many as 12 on Commons, to create different resolutions). Please slow down, seriously. You are contributing material that is obviously appropriate to be here, and it's greatly appreciated, but 'way' too fast. Reventtalk 15:57, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I did not intend to cause a problem, I set up a list to upload while I was away. I wasn't trying to flood the system, and I will let the system catch up. Thanks. -- Jasonanaggie (talk) 17:17, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Perhaps in the future there will be some priority system to keep stuffs working even when there are these unintentional floods, but it'll probably take a while. :) --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:32, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, while that phab ticket is still not resolved, the extra trancoding workers, which I just fired up two hours ago to temporarily help in this backlog, should preferably stay down. They'll be (almost permanently) running once the ticket is resolved and the videoscalers are fine with them --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:38, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just curious, but when I am looking at the Ganglia scaler performance per node, why does it not look like the system is flooded? It looks to be working at under 50% load on all servers. -- Jasonanaggie (talk) 17:41, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Those you see on Ganglia are the production videoscalers, which resize videos already uploaded to commons. They handle what you see as the "transcode status" at the bottom of each video file page. Unfortunately, their configurations are kind of unintelligent and does not attempt to scale by # of CPU cores available. The number of workers on each node is currently hardcoded, and use up about 50% load on each server to be safe so Commons doesn't crash (that's an exaggeration but WMF operation engineers don't usually like too much load on their servers, AFAIK)
Video2commons video transcoders are monitored in a different place. Available sources include Grafana (half broken), Nagf, and my fork of Nagf displaying load. For reference, each transcoding node (encoding01, encoding02, encoding03) had 16 virtual CPU cores (yeah they are virtual machines), so load max out at 16, any value above it is overloaded. Also, each node are configured to have twice as many workers as the number of CPU cores available, so the maximum load is just above 200%. ("Just above" may be too small, but each worker's transcoding process has multiple threads and complicates the issue) --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:56, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The reason the load was around 50% until today (you can see now utilization is nearly peaking) is that we solved a few bugs that were occasionally making the videoscalers to go to 100% CPU. I fine-tuned that today, but still we're able to run around 70 transcodes in parallel. Given that most files you uploaded take around 1 hour/transcode, and that we have 12 transcodes per file, it means we can reasonably expect to process about 6 of your videos per hour right now; that puts us in an uncomfortable place where it will take around 100 hours, or 5 days, to process all that queue. This means that all other videos uploaded are waiting in queue to be transcoded and that is giving a very bad service to everyone else. While I'll be working on setting up sensible limits for the video2commons upload rate with the service admins, please wait before uploading new videos, or I might need to cancel the enqueued transcodes. Thanks for your help GLavagetto (WMF) (talk) 20:04, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If you have any questions regarding how / why everything works, feel free to ask and I'm happy to answer. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:58, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
See Special:TimedMediaHandler... the backlog is nearly 13k transcodes. The number of 'running' transcodes is also inaccurate, due to, well, bugs, but the system is quite not keeping up. The 'stress test' revealed a serious bug in how tasks were started, that until the 19th was causing nearly 'all' transcodes to fail once the servers became overloaded (they were loaded until they ran out of RAM, at about 500% load). Reventtalk 21:13, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Same for your NASA-Flickr flood. Many are duplicates, could you please check before you upload? It takes a lot of manpower to process your duplicates. Thanks a bunch! C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 06:12, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
arggh, crap. There are tons more. PLEASE! Pay attention when uploading! Thanks mate! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 06:17, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Republication of documents

[edit]

When uploading documents (or in general any file), you have to consider the copyright holder (usually the original author unless copyright was transferred). In all cases, either:

  • The document must be public domain, or:
  • The document must be released by the copyright holder under a free license.

For example, File:Michael T. Flynn Offer of Testimony.png is a work of a private company, and thus only that company can decide whether to release it under a free license. Uploading the image does not create a separate copyright.

File:Michael Flynn 10 December 2015 Booking.pdf is also the work of a private company. Congress can republish it, but that does not mean it is public domain, because it was not created by Congress (and in general was not created by a U.S. government employee).

I appreciate your work, and some of these images may be suitable for English Wikipedia under the Wikipedia:Non-free content policy. Mattflaschen - Talk 05:51, 1 April 2017 (UTC) Mattflaschen - Talk 05:50, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your VFC installation method is deprecated

[edit]

Hello Jasonanaggie, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Template:Red To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead Template:ActivateGadget in your preferences.
