surrounded by a strong membranous saccalled the pericardium, which protects it, and confines it to its properplace. It occupies an oblique position in the chest, and is almostwholly covered by the lobes of the left lung. The medium weightof the heart, in adults, is from eight to ten ounces, being about anounce heavier in man than in woman. The heart has four cavities, two of which are called auricles and twoventricles; and from its peculiar construction may properly be calleda double organ, having two sides, the right and the left, with anauricle and ventricle in each. The compartments of the two sides,are separated by a muscular partition, called the septum. The aortaor great artery-trunk, and the pulmonary artery proceed from the heart—the latter from the right ventricle, and the other from the leftventricle. The large trunks of the veins, called the descending andascending vena ca,va, and the pulmonary veins, terminate or open intothe auricles of the heart. THE LAWS OF HEALTH. 25
